The dream of the Troll – Norways first car:

Norways first road car. The Troll was made entirely of plastic, and only 5 units were produced. Discontinued in 1958, unfortunately.

After The Ford Motor Company dropped their EV department in 1999, a group of norwegian investors picked up the estate, and in 2007 launched the fully electric two seater, THINK – the first norwegian made car in 50 years. Although, in 2011 this too was discontinued, making Norway a country without any automobile manufacturer, yet again.

Being Norways attempt of building something that could, if not compete, at least look like something that of a real german Porsche. It was supposed to look Norwegian, elegant, but also cool while it was not taking itself too seriously.

Although the Troll has a certain goofyness, it really was an attempt to revolutionize how a modern automobile could be. With a low cost engine, and a super light plastic body, it never needed much power, or petrol. In many ways long ahead of its time, but as we now know, maybe a little too long ahead.

So, is the Troll anywhere to be seen nowadays? If you were ever to spot this car on the streets, the chances of it being a dream is nearly a 100%. Although, in 2018, a group of engineering students from the Norwegian Technical University NTNU, got hold of the old moulding plates from the original Troll factory. With new technology, they were able to recreate the body parts in the exact shape as the original, using the real plates from 1958. This meant that for the first time since its beginning in the 1950s, the Troll was suddenly possible to get a glimpse of, if you would be ever so lucky. And when these students had the chance to decide how the car would be, why not go all in, or out, and make it a convertible. And that was exactly what they did. So now in 2026, there is a total of 7 Trolls produced: The prototype, the four following produced for sale, and the 2018 convertible.

If you do not want to wait around for the lightning to strike, or win the lottery of Norwegian car spotting, the prototype is exhibited at the National Road Museum in Lillehammer: vegmuseum.no.

Do you see a future for this car? I think we do, but of course, that may just be the dream of the Troll.
